F1 makes significant change to points system for 2025

A change is to be made to the way F1 awards points in 2025, after discussions were had earlier this year.

F1 is to drop the bonus point awarded for the fastest lap in the 2025 season after a meeting of the World Motor Sport Council.

The extra point was re-introduced in 2019 for those drivers who took the fastest lap and finished inside the top 10, but after five seasons, it is to be dropped from next season.

It comes after discussions earlier this season about overhauling the points system to award drivers from 1st-12th in the classification with points, up from the current top 10.

This was eventually dismissed after discussions with the 25-18-15-12-10-8-6-4-2-1 system introduced in 2010 being retained.

Elsewhere, the FIA has restructured the sporting, technical and financial rules, simplifying them ahead of the 2026 revamp.

A restructuring of the regulations has been an oft-called-for necessity, with a "reorganisation of the way the regulations are laid out being divided into thematic sections for clarity and consistency."

The sporting regulations are Section B, the sporting rules are Section C and the financial rules that cover the cost cap come under Section D.

It is expected further elements will be submitted for WMSC approval in the coming months.

The next WMSC meeting is on December 11th after the F1 season-finale in Abu Dhabi.

Excellent! Well done the FIA (on this occasion). I would not mind having a point for pole position – generally the fastest racing of the weekend – but this point for fastest lap in the race was indefensible.

Give a point for every starter, Why not give a point for scrutineering, A point for not swearing at press conference ect, ect,. There is no end. Alex Albon just said he has now outraced Sir Jackie Stewart at 100 races, That shows how statistics are flawed, A point for pole position would be a step forward
