Alpine confirm Famin to step down as team principal

Bruno Famin is to step down as team principal at Alpine by the end of August, the team has confirmed. 

RacingNews365 reported earlier in the week that Famin was on the verge of stepping down after being named interim team principal at the 2023 Belgian GP after Otmar Szafnauer's departure. 

Famin, who dovetailed the role with duties as Alpine vice-president of motorsport, stayed on for the 2024 season, but will leave by the end of August. 

F1's summer break starts after the Spa weekend, with the next race set to be the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort on August 25th. 

"Alpine F1 Team can confirm that Bruno Famin will move away from his current role as Team Principal of the F1 division by the end of August," read a statement. 

"Bruno will be in charge of all other Motorsport activities of the Renault Group at Viry-Chatillon. A new Team Principal will be announced in due course."

Major changes

The news of Famin's exit from the role comes as he also confirmed major changes set to be made by the team in terms of its power unit supplier. 

Famin has confirmed that the team is looking to shut down its power unit operation at Viry in favour of taking on a customer Mercedes power unit supply. 

Renault has struggled with its power unit since the adoption of the turbo hybrid units in 2014, with the current engines known to be down on power, but due to the power unit development freeze in place, performance upgrades cannot be brought to the car.

Ahead of the technical regulations changing for 2026, featuring beefed-up electrical systems, Alpine is set to be powered by Mercedes power and end its status as a works programme.
