Damon Hill believes that Fernando Alonso is on his "best behaviour" at Aston Martin to protect his F1 legacy, after his troubled past with teams. Alonso left both Ferrari and McLaren on poor terms due to their performance, the latter twice after a spat with Lewis Hamilton then later after the team had an unsuccessful partnership with Honda. The 1996 F1 World Champion thinks the Spaniard has become the "prodigal son" after a difficult few seasons in the latter part of his career, and now finding his way back to the podium with Aston Martin. "He's the prodigal son, isn't he?" Hill said on the F1 Nation podcast. "He basically overplayed his hand when he was at McLaren, then he did something similar at Ferrari, and then he basically insulted Honda, because he called it a 'GP2 engine' and he lost a lot of friends."

Even though Alonso is revered as one of the best drivers on the grid owing to his talent and ability to extract the most out of a car, he still only has the 2005 and 2006 titles to his name. Hill thinks Alonso's troubled history with certain teams has contributed to his lack of success over the years, but his stint at Aston Martin should help with his legacy in the history of F1. "I think he's had an epiphany! A bit of a turnaround, he's come back and gone 'Listen, okay, I get it now I've upset people. It's hurt my career, I've only got two world championships when I should have four or five' So yeah, he's on his best behaviour."
