Scott McLaughlin was left in tears after crashing out of the delayed Indy 500 before the race even started.

Under a rain delay, cars eventually started their recon laps about 40 minutes behind schedule, with McLaughlin losing control on the pit-straight.

The Penske driver went over the yard of bricks and was approaching Turn 1, but in the greasy conditions, crashed into the pit-wall.

He destroyed the left-front of the car and came to a halt in the pit-lane exit, breaking in tears on the grass.

In a post-crash interview, he described it as "the worst day of his life."

It leaves 32 runners in the field, with Chip Ganassi's Scott Dixon also suffering a brake fire.

Once the race finally got underway, Marco Andretti, the grandson of the great Mario, was eliminated in a first corner crash.
