Sandstorm wreaks havoc on Formula 1 testing

The decision to hold testing in Bahrain rather than Barcelona comes with its set of advantages and disadvantages. One of those drawbacks played out on Friday as a sandstorm complicated proceedings.

There were signs that it was coming during the morning session, and after lunch it was clear for all to see that sand was everywhere at the Bahrain International Circuit. Strong winds made the track dusty and visibility was poor, meaning drivers were slow to take to the track. The Alpine of Esteban Ocon was first on track, though it was tough to make him out at some points. Not ideal conditions for drivers and teams with test time so scarce, and the sandstorms certainly didn't help matters when it comes to grip. Drivers were seen slipping and sliding as they came to grips with the unpredictable and ever-changing track conditions.
