A career that promised so much was drastically altered in a few short moments. Robert Kubica was a potential F1 star, however an accident at the Ronde di Andorra Rally nearly cost him his life and kept him out of an F1 race for eight long years. Through sheer determination and force of will he returned in 2019, racing for Williams alongside George Russell and scored the team’s solitary point that season.

Born in Krakow, Poland, Kubica began karting at the age of 10 winning several titles in his home nation and in Europe. Some of his accomplishments include winning back to back titles at the Junior Monaco Kart Cup and the Trofeo Andrea Margutti.

Kubica made the step-up into formula cars in 2000, when he also joined theRenault Driver Development Program. The Polish driver then moved into Formula 3 machinery contesting the Formula 3 Eurocup, breaking the lap record at the prestigious Monaco Grand Prix though he would ultimately finish second at the 2006 event. He ended his junior formula car career with a win in the 2005 Formula Renault 3.5 series.

Kubica would be handed his F1 debut in 2006 when former world champion Jacques Villeneuve left Sauber midway through the season. Thanks in part to podium finish at the Italian Grand Prix, he secured a drive alongside Nick Heidfeld for the following season.

The 2007 campaign would see Kubica crash heavily at the Canadian Grand Prix, forcing the team to give a young German by the name of Sebastian Vettel his debut at the United States Grand Prix. The Pole would then return for the remainder of the season finishing sixth in the championship. The following year represented Kubica’s best in Formula 1. He won his first race at the Canadian Grand Prix along with six further podiums that put him in contention for the title during parts of the season, before dropping off in the final few races en route to fourth overall in the championship.

Kubica would have an uncompetitive 2009 season before moving to Renault in 2010. His sole season with the team saw him finish on the podium once and end the year in eighth. During the winter break he would suffer his aforementioned rally crash that put his F1 career on hold.

He made his comeback in 2019 racing for Williams, but the uncompetitive car meant Kubica could only manage a best result of 10th at the German Grand Prix and then signed on as reserve driver for Alfa Romeo in 2020.
