Raikkonen muses possibility of son racing in F1

Kimi Raikkonen has shared his view on the possibility of his son Robin following his footsteps and racing in F1.

2007 world champion Raikkonen made a rare paddock visit to the Italian Grand Prix with his family, including son Robin who has been making his first steps in go-kart racing and is beginning to climb the ladder.

Raikkonen retired after a DNF at the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, and now devotes his time to acting as his son's mechanic.

Observing if it was possible for nine-year-old Robin to climb through the ranks and become the second-generation Raikkonen to race in F1, the 21-time grand prix winner urged caution.

“It’s been busy [since I retired], we moved to Italy, and I’ve been a mechanic for Robin [as he starts go-karting]," Raikkonen told F1. 

"Rianna is doing gymnastics, and we have a small [child, Grace], so it is a busy family life! But it’s been great.

“[Robin] is enjoying [karting], and we’ll see if something comes or not, who knows? 

"He’s having fun – that’s the main thing."

Raikkonen on modern F1

Raikkonen also discussed how much he keeps up to date with modern F1 and shared his thoughts on the state of the series with four teams vying for victory on a consistent basis. 

"Not much, because there’s always something that we’re doing with the kids and the family," he said when asked how much he still follows grand prix racing.

"[There's] been times when we’ve been home and it’s been on TV, I will watch, I still have the interest, but I don’t know everything like I used to.

“But it’s good. 

"[It’s] interesting to see always how it goes. It looks like things are getting closer now in the racing, so it’s good for F1 and all the fans."
