RacingNews365's 2024 F1 British Grand Prix driver ratings

The British Grand Prix was a wet and wild 52 laps for the 20 F1 drivers on the grid, with rain falling through a soggy Silverstone weekend. 

But who shone through the mist to bag a perfect 10 and who was left staring into the abyss after another horror show?

Top five

NICO HULKENBERG - 10 

If you ever wanted proof that Hulkenberg was not a blusted flush in his 2023 comeback, the previous two races have been it, but what he started in Austria, he took and ran with at Silverstone. 

In the freshly-upgraded Haas, he out-qualified both works Ferraris on merit, and perhaps could have been even higher and, although Sainz beat him to the flag, sixth-place was even better than he could have hoped for, given George Russell's DNF and various other calamities. He is excelling for Haas at the moment, scoring big points 16 alone in the last two races. He will be tough to replace in 2025.

LEWIS HAMILTON - 9.5

This rating caused much consternation among the RacingNews365 team, but Hamilton cannot be awarded a perfect 10 for his weekend. 

His race drive was faultless and a rolling back of the years as he cradled his tyres in the final stint mixed with some wet-weather mastery. 

But he is docked half a point for being nearly two-tenths slower than Russell in qualifying - the difference between P1 and P2 on the grid. You want to be perfect, beating your team-mate in qualifying is the best place to start.

LANCE STROLL - 8.5

Stroll has received some fair criticism for his performances at times, but this was a strong weekend for the Canadian - and one in which he out-performed Fernando Alonso, whose form continues to be patchy. 

Alonso probably shaded Stroll in terms of out-right pure performance, but it was Stroll who out-qualified and then out-raced Alonso fair and square as Aston Martin returned to competitiveness.

Nothing to shout home about and he is docked half a mark for not beating Hulkenberg over the line, but this was Stroll's best-executed weekend for a while.

MAX VERSTAPPEN - 8

Running wide through Copse in qualifying totalling your floor is not the best start to the weekend, but Max Verstappen did good job thereafter.

Fourth on the grid was perhaps the best he could have got given the significant damage he was carrying, and then he leap-frogged Lando Norris at the start to run third. Swift, clear strategy calls around the change to inters and back again got him into third - which became second with McLaren's Norris blunder.

On a weekend the Red Bull was only third fastest, he further extended his points lead by three and banked another podium. More could not have been gotten.

OSCAR PIASTRI - 8

Again, Piastri is docked half-a-mark for being out-qualified by Norris, to the tune of two-tenths, but his race drive was strong. 

He was decisive in passing Hamilton for P2 as the rain began to fall and was unlucky to be forced to go around again when the rest of the leaders pitted for intermediates. 

Could he have made the call himself to double-stack? We'll never know, but the damage was done as Norris almost caught him by the end of the extra lap, falling to sixth. 

After the change back to slicks, Piastri was the fastest car on track, setting multiple fastest laps as he reduced a 15-second gap to Norris down to just five by the flag.

Bottom five

KEVIN MAGNUSSEN - 5

Whereas Hulkenberg excelled in the VF-24, Magnussen made it look to be a midfield fodder car, qualifying 17th but rising to 12th in the race. Making five places, although two were down to Russell's DNF and the Leclerc horror show, was a good return, but in a car Hulkenberg had flirting with the points throughout the weekend, he should have backed the German up. Showed flashes of pace, but nowhere near enough. 

VALTERRI BOTTAS - 5

Half-way through the season, Bottas remains point-less in a poor Stake car, but this was a mixed performance. Yes he was out-qualified by Zhou Guanyu in the sister car, who was placed onto a horror strategy by the team of softs and early intermediate gamble, but Bottas did not and ran the conventional race.

The clincher for why he is in the bottom five is that he finished behind Charles Leclerc on the early inter-strategy, with Zhou last. 

CHARLES LECLERC - 3

Ferrari brought no upgrades to Silverstone, prefering to do back-to-back testing of its recent upgrades to try and find out where it has gone wrong with the SF-24. 

Being dumped in Q2 was a poor effort, even if he was struggling for balance in the high-speed, a known Ferrari weakness.

His strong early progress up to seventh was torpedoed by Ferrari opting for intermediates on a dry track on lap 20. His race ended there and then as he took 14th, his worst classified finish since Russia 2021. 

SERGIO PEREZ - 2 

Track conditions in Q1 were clearly a struggle for the field, but to lose the car on an out-lap and beach it at Copse was inexcusable from a driver drowning. 

The fact that Verstappen was able to power through his own mirror-image style off minutes later about summed up Perez's weekend.

Again, strong early pace in the race on the hards was met with an early 'hero or zero' move to intermediates.

It failed and he came home a dispiriting 17th, two laps down.

PIERRE GASLY N/A

Given Gasly sat out FP1 for Jack Doohan, knew he would be starting at the back of the grid anyway due to power unit changes and then retired on the formation lap with a gearbox issue, it is not fair to award him any mark.

However, it was careless to spin off during FP3 and beach the Alpine.
