Oscar Piastri has conceded finishing second in the Austrian Grand Prix "hurt" as he came agonisingly close to a maiden victory.

The McLaren driver started in seventh after exceeding track limits in qualifying, but quickly made up places in the race - a move on Lewis Hamilton mid-race promoted him to fifth, where he looked set to finish.

However, a dramatic collision between Max Verstappen and Lando Norris promoted Piastri to third in the closing laps, placing him suddenly on the gearbox of Carlos Sainz.

Piastri made light work of the Spaniard but ran out of laps to catch George Russell for victory.

Russell secured the win just two seconds ahead of Piastri, who admitted to disappointment after coming so close.

“There are a lot of what ifs and maybes, obviously, starting from [Saturday]," said Piastri.

"But yes, I know that's only my fourth podium in F1, but so close to a win it hurts a little bit, but really good points.

"Second half of the race we were coming on pretty strong. And yeah, happy with another podium, just when it's that close you can't help but hurt a little bit."

Piastri eying next opportunity

Having struggled recently during the Spanish Grand Prix, Piastri appeared to bounce back in the Red Bull Ring.

The Australian was back to his best in Spielberg and now hopes to take his positive result forwards to the British Grand Prix.

"It was a place of good memories from last year, and hopefully we can be up the front again obviously," added Piastri.

"I haven't seen what happened with Lando and Max, but clearly it was pretty even up the front.

"I think we will be in the mix, Silverstone is a track I always enjoy. Team's home race, so excited for what's to come."
