Schumacher was quick right from the time he started karting, winning a series of titles both in Germany and in Europe. He made the transition to formula cars in 1988 placing second in the European Formula Ford 1600 series and winning the Formula Konig championship. In 1990 he would win both the German Formula 3 Championship and the Macau Grand Prix. These results would enable him to make his Formula 1 debut with Jordan at the 1991 Belgian Grand Prix.

After a single race with the team, Schumacher would move to Benetton and win his first grand prix at Belgium, the site of his F1 debut a year earlier. He added a second win at the Portuguese Grand Prix the following year. With the help of Ross Brawn both the Benetton team and Schumacher would come into their own. He won the 1994 title in controversial circumstances at the final race in Adelaide, when the German crashed into title rival Damon Hill. Schumacher would win his second title in 1995 by a single point after suffering two disqualifications at the British and Belgian Grand Prix.

The German would move to Ferrari, a team in desperate search of a boost, for the 1996 campaign. Schumacher along with Brawn, Jean Todt, and Rory Byrne would transform the fortunes of the struggling Italian team, winning six consecutive constructors’ and five consecutive drivers’ championships between 1999 and 2004. The Schumacher-Ferrari pairing would prove to be one of the most dominant combinations in the history of Formula 1, though they would eventually give up their mantle to Renault and Fernando Alonso who himself would win back to back titles in 2005 and 2006.

Schumacher would retire from the sport at the end of 2006. However, he would make a surprise comeback in 2010 racing for Mercedes. His three years at the team were largely disappointing in terms of on-track results, claiming just one podium at the 2012 European Grand Prix.

In 2013 the German legend would be involved in a skiing accident that saw him put into a coma. The exact details of his physical condition are unknown and his family has kept updates to the public at a minimum.
