Former F1 driver and current GPDA chairman Alex Wurz has predicted there will be “crazy scenes” in the sport this year.

His comment comes as F1 prepares for a new season under fresh technical regulations, with changes being made to both the aerodynamic and power unit rules.

The power units will see increased influence from the battery, with the electrical component matching the output of the combustion engine.

As the drivers adapt to the new engine, Wurz is expecting dramatic moments in the months ahead.

“The first half of the season in particular could be extremely interesting with the new energy management system,” Kronen Zeitung

“There could be some crazy scenes. You can gain more than a second in various corners and sectors.”

Ahead of the sport's new era, reports emerged that two manufacturers - Mercedes and Red Bull Powertrains - found a trick with the new power units.

Although no answers will be clear until the cars hit the track, Wurz has stated that any advantage with the power unit could prove critical in the fight for the title.

“The FIA has reduced the compression, and the measurement is taken at room temperature,” he said.

“Apparently, two manufacturers have exploited thermal expansion. We're talking about 10 to 15 horsepower, which translates to three to four tenths of a second per lap.

“Even a top driver can't beat a poor one for that. This could decide the world championship.”
