With Kimi Antonelli and George Russell, Mercedes will be aiming for the Formula 1 World Championship in 2025. How will this driver pairing perform now that the great Lewis Hamilton has moved to Ferrari?

The F1 constructor is led by Team Principal and Chief Executive Toto Wolff, with the Austrian having signed a contract to extend his stay for another three years in 2023. As part of the deal, Mercedes announced chemical giant Ineos had bought into the team, creating an equal three-way partnership with Wolff and Daimler. In 2024, Mercedes will supply engines to Williams, McLaren and the Aston Martin team.

F1 history of Mercedes

Mercedes have a rich history in the sport that stretches back to 1950 and the first ever F1 race. In the years that followed, the team achieved great success, with Juan Manuel Fangio winning world titles in 1954 and 1955 before the Silver Arrows withdrew from the sport following the 1955 disaster at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

It wouldn't be until 1997 that the silver colours would be seen again in Formula 1, as Mercedes signed on as engine suppliers for McLaren, tasting success when Mika Hakkinen won the Drivers' Championship in 1998 and 1999. In 2010, they returned as a works team, having acquired a large stake in the 2009 title-winning Brawn GP. Michael Schumacher came out of retirement to help rebuild the outfit, before making way for Hamilton ahead of the 2013 season.

Between 2014 and 2020, the Brackley-based outfit dominated F1, capturing a total of 14 World Championships – seven Drivers' and seven Constructors' honours. Only in 2016 did Hamilton fail to deliver the drivers' title, as he was beaten by then-teammate Nico Rosberg before the German retired and Valtteri Bottas joined the ranks.

In 2021, Mercedes faced increased competition from Red Bull. A season-long battle between Hamilton and Max Verstappen came to a controversial conclusion at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, where Verstappen took the title on the final lap of the race. Mercedes were still able to claim another Constructors' Championship, though, their eighth in a row.

With Mercedes being one of the losers of the 2022 season, the team dropped to third in the Constructors' Championship, with only one Grand Prix win all season. Affected by porpoising, the car concept was fundamentally flawed and difficult to extract pace from, creating a frustrating year for Lewis Hamilton, who went an entire season without a win for the first time in his career.

In August 2023, Mercedes announced that Russell and Hamilton would also form the driver duo for the German team in 2024 and 2025

Mercedes F1 2023 and 2024 season

In 2023, Mercedes was determined to once again compete with the top teams, including Red Bull and Ferrari. However, Red Bull proved to be exceptionally dominant in the 2023 season. As a result, Mercedes had to contend with Ferrari for the second place in the constructor's championship, which was eventually won by Mercedes. A significant addition to the team was Mick Schumacher, who would serve as a test and reserve driver.

After finishing second in 2023, Mercedes was unable to continue this positive trend. In 2024, the team dropped to fourth in the constructors' championship, partly due to an underperforming car. However, both George Russell and Lewis Hamilton managed to win twice this season.

Lewis Hamilton left Mercedes at the end of the 2024 season

Despite extending his contract in August 2023, the Briton announced in January 2024 that he would be moving to Ferrari. This is a big blow for Mercedes, as Hamilton is one of the most successful drivers in the team's history.
