McLaren handed first Austin 'victory' since 2012

Although inconsequential, McLaren has won its first test of the United States Grand Prix weekend in Austin.

Track action at the 2024 F1 United States Grand Prix has yet to begin, but McLaren has been handed an early victory to kickstart the weekend in Austin.

The Papaya squad is one of three teams to run a special livery at the Circuit of the Americas (COTA), alongside Haas, at its home race, and Alpine, which is running an Indiana Jones-inspired look to promote the upcoming launch of a new Xbox game.

The Woking-based team, however, has opted for a chrome theme, which has a twofold motivation behind it. Firstly, it is in support of sponsor Google and its search engine, Google Chrome.

Secondly, it is a tribute to McLaren liveries of old, acting as a homage to the 'chrome era' between 2006 and 2014.

It has evidently gone down well with F1 fans, who voted the McLaren look their favourite of the three in a recent poll by RacingNews365 - a first victory for the team in Austin since the first trip to COTA, when Lewis Hamilton won in 2012.

Over two-thirds - specifically 67.23% - of respondents selected the McLaren livery as their favourite temporary look.

Meanwhile, the orange Alpine secured a measly 7.47% of the vote, leaving Haas to collect just over a quarter of all ballots cast.

Will McLaren be able to follow up on its early United States Grand Prix triumph?
