Liam Lawson is on the brink of a Formula 1 grid penalty, with the Racing Bulls driver having been fitted with several new engine components almost outside his legal pool.
For the Canadian Grand Prix, Lawson has been fitted with his final legal internal combustion engine (ICE), turbocharger (TC) and motor generator unit-heat (MGU-H) – the fourth and final legal new component in each pool.
In addition, the New Zealander has also received a new exhaust system, although it is only the fourth new exhaust of the eight allowed.
Should Lawson require a further new ICE, TC or MGU-H this season, it will trigger a grid penalty.
Further engine changes have been made in the paddock for this weekend at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, with both Mercedes drivers having received a new component for each engine element.
Kimi Antonelli retired in the Spanish Grand Prix following a power unit failure, resulting in a brand-new ICE, TC, MGU-H, motor generator unit-kinetic (MGU-K) and exhaust for the Italian. Russell has received the exact same.
Significant changes have also been made to Fernando Alonso's engine, with Aston Martin having fitted a new component for each engine element as well.
It means three Mercedes power units have been completely changed for new parts; however, Russell, Antonelli nor Alonso are close to a grid penalty.
