Lance Stroll has bemoaned the "stupid" decision to take intermediate tyres during Q2 at the Las Vegas Grand Prix.
With rain hitting the start of qualifying, both Stroll and team-mate Fernando Alonso immediately took the wet tyres, with both performing well in the first segment.
The rain began to ease before the start of Q2, with Stroll initially sitting in fifth place after running on the wet tyres, but with six minutes remaining, he elected to switch to the intermediate tyres.
But with two minutes required for a lap owing to the conditions, this meant Stroll could only get two flying laps plus his out lap.
In the end, the Canadian was knocked out in 12th place, with Alonso securing a Q3 slot in seventh as he went 0.915s faster in Q2.
Reflecting Stroll felt the decision was "stupid" and that a berth on the front two rows was possible.
"It was stupid in the end, it is not the team's fault, it was a group decision," Stroll told media, including RacingNews365.
"I was told I was going to get three push [laps], but I only got two, and that's where it went wrong.
"It was a shame, we threw away a good opportunity to fight for the top, probably three or four.
"With three push [laps], I was pretty confident that we were going to make something good happen, but with the two push, there was no chance, so that's what went wrong."
