Kimi Antonelli's hopes of a strong result on home soil went up in smoke after he retired from the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix.
The Italian driver, who was born nearby in Bologna, took part in his first home race following his promotion to F1 this year with Mercedes.
However, he endured a difficult qualifying session and ended the outing in 13th, leaving him at a disadvantage for the race.
The 18-year-old had made his way into the points but he was unable to run to the end as the W16 ran into issues on his 45th lap.
Antonelli pulled to the side of the track and returned from the grand prix - marking his first non-finish in F1.
Antonelli became the second driver to retire from the race as Esteban Ocon also pulled over in exactly the same spot several laps prior.
