Horner: I was surprised to read Cowell is joining Red Bull!

Red Bull boss Christian Horner has said he was surprised to read that he had, apparently, hired Andy Cowell to join the new Red Bull engine department.

Christian Horner has expressed his surprise at having apparently hired Andy Cowell to join Red Bull's engine department, having had no recollection of such a signing. Cowell is a free agent this year, having left Mercedes High Performance Powertrains in 2020, and is a high profile power unit engineer that would be an obvious target for the newly formed Red Bull engine department to target. Asked about recent reports that he had apparently convinced Cowell to join the team, Horner said the story was untrue. "Obviously there’s a lot of media traction on these topics with personnel joining this obviously new venture," Horner explained to media, including RacingNews365.com , "but I can say I was surprised to read this story this morning that apparently Andy has agreed to join us because that isn’t the case." While Red Bull have succeeded in attracting Ben Hodgkinson and several other engineers away from Mercedes, Toto Wolff explained that there's no sign that Cowell has any desire to return to F1 any time soon. "I speak to Andy every week about different things and for me it doesn’t seem that he is going to Red Bull," he said. "But in this sport we have seen many black swans, so at the moment, what I think is he’s not going there. "It would be a big surprise because it would mean it’s different to what we have discussed but there is nothing stopping him from taking any decision, whether he continues on his entrepreneurial journey or returns to Formula 1 in a different role."
