Fernando Alonso understands Aston Martin's decision to have Adrian Newey focus solely on its 2026 car despite the '25 struggles.
Alonso is yet to score a point in the 2025 season, and if he does not register at this weekend's Emilia Romagna GP at Imola, it would equal his worst point-less run to start a season from 2015, going seven races, in which he competed in, without a top 10 finish. Only his point-less rookie season at Minardi in 2001 is a worse beginning.
Aston Martin has slipped back down the pecking order since Alonso joined in 2023, with the team regularly fielding questions about whether new design guru Newey would examine the 2025 car to try and fix its weaknesses.
However, boss Andy Cowell has been firm that Newey is only directing attention to the 2026 machine, with the rules overhaul coming into force, which is a position Alonso agrees with following lunch with Newey.
"I've never lost the trust, and I don't worry about next year's car, this year is just a continuation of some of the problems we found in the last two seasons and have not been able to overcome some obstacles we have found," Alonso told media including RacingNews365.
"For next year, with Adrian on board, nothing of this car is going to be in next year's project, so it is a complete reset, so I am not too concerned.
"For this year, the fix is not straightforward, and there is nothing we can do from day to night today, but I was in the factory, had lunch with Adrian, but nothing too much about this year.
"It was more of a general talk about the team in general and how he felt after these first few weeks at Aston, and some changes that may happen.
"I don't have the expertise of designing the car as he has, he must require much he requires and how much time he needs to dedicate.
"I think he would have preferred joining the team one year ago and starting on 2026, so even for that project, I'm sure he thinks it is late.
"So I completely understand that he needs to focus only on next year's car, and he didn't make this car, he didn't touch the car, didn't design it, so I don't think it is up to him to fix the car."
