F1 teams experiment with new rules

After Formula 1 drivers battled sweltering conditions during last year's Qatar Grand Prix, the FIA made the decision to improve driver safety in the cockpits.

It's well known that drivers can experience over 40 degrees centigrade of heat in their cockpits during races, which is why some employ cooling devices in their nosecones to help drivers.

Now the FIA has introduced a new rule in light of the Qatar race, which saw some drivers pass out while behind the wheel and Williams driver Logan Sargeant retire due to the conditions.

Scoop design

The measure is an air scoop that can be implemented on the top of the nose section, creating a pass-through of air directly to the driver. Some teams have been experimenting with these measures during pre-season testing at Bahrain this week.

The scoop has originally been planned for 2023 but was shelved until this year, due to one team having concerns over the aerodynamic implications.

Red Bull appear to have a double scoop array, while Mercedes has gone with a single scoop used on George Russell's car.
