Arguably Formula 1’s greatest driver, Ayrton Senna made his debut in the sport in 1984 racing for the Toleman team. Despite the team’s relative lack of competitiveness, Senna was able to finish second at the Monaco Grand Prix. He was on course to win, catching leader Alain Prost at a rate of four seconds a lap, however, the race was red-flagged due to poor weather conditions. He finished on the podium on two further occasions securing third at the British and Portuguese Grand Prix.

Senna then moved to the Lotus team in 1985. He won his first-ever race for the team at the 1985 Portuguese Grand Prix and won for a second time at the Belgian Grand Prix. More success followed in 1986 as he would establish himself as one of Formula 1’s front runners taking two more victories and eight pole positions en route to fourth in the driver’s championship. His final season with Lotus would see him go one better and finish third in the championship with two more wins.

The Brazilian would then move to McLaren in 1988 and establish his legacy as one of the sport’s all-time greats. Teaming up with the great Alain Prost, the two would go on to dominate the sport in a manner never seen before. Senna would win the 1988 driver’s championship, Prost would win again in 1989 and depart the team before the Brazilian won consecutive titles in 1990 and 1991.

Unfortunately, 1992 and 1993 would be uncompetitive years for Senna and he would move to Williams in 1994. Tragically, a crash at that season’s San Marino Grand Prix would end his life and the sport would lose one of the finest drivers to ever grace the grid.

Senna’s career would consist of three world championships, 41 wins, and an astonishing 65 pole positions from 161 race starts.
