Former F1 driver Ralf Schumacher has suggested a move to Ferrari could become an option for Max Verstappen in the future.
Verstappen has raced for Red Bull since his early-season promotion to the front-running squad in 2016, winning four F1 titles.
However, Aston Martin has also been labelled as a potential destination for Verstappen going forward following renowned car designer Adrian Newey's switch to the project this year.
The Dutchman has also been linked with a move to Mercedes, with team principal Toto Wolff publicly pursuing Verstappen last year.
But speaking to Sky Sports Deutschland, Schumacher does not see Mercedes - in its current form - as a viable candidate to land Verstappen.
“We have to wait and see what happens,” Schumacher said.
“Mercedes, of course, still has the problem that they don't know which direction to take with the development of the car. At least that's how it looks, but it's still early.
“If both drivers get along very well, then Toto Wolff may not want to sacrifice anyone. And then there is the financial aspect.
“Max Verstappen is not exactly cheap. If you then have two drivers who just work well together, that may just be the better choice.”
Verstappen has a contract in place with Red Bull until 2028, however, it has not halted talk of a potential early exit.
While Schumacher sees Aston Martin as a logical option for Verstappen, he has not ruled out the possibility of linking up with Ferrari.
"The more I think about it, the more logical it would be for Verstappen to go to Aston Martin,” Schumacher added.
“And maybe a little more far-fetched, and especially depending on how long he stays at Red Bull, he might also go to Ferrari. You can't write them off either.”
