Williams explain Sargeant dismissal decision

Williams team principal James Vowles has revealed his decision to axe Logan Sargeant was not one he made lightly but felt he had no choice in order to keep the team in the fight for the rest of the F1 season.

Sargeant's dramatic fiery crash in final practice of the Dutch Grand Prix on Saturday proved to be the final straw for Vowles who before the summer break had already opted to sign Carlos Sainz for next season as a replacement for the American.

With so much on the line for Williams, which has fallen to ninth in the constructors' championship, four points above point-less Stake and nine adrift of Alpine, Vowles has acted to give his team a fighting chance, although he has taken a gamble in hiring Academy product Franco Colapinto for the remaining nine grands prix. 

“To replace a driver mid-season is not a decision we have taken lightly, but we believe this gives Williams the best chance to compete for points over the remainder of the season," said Vowles.

"We have just brought a large upgrade to the car and need to maximise every points-scoring opportunity in a remarkably tight midfield battle.

"We also believe in investing in our young drivers in the Williams Racing Driver Academy, and Franco is getting a fantastic opportunity to demonstrate what he is capable of across the final nine rounds of the season.

"I know that Franco has great speed and huge potential, and we look forward to seeing what he can do in Formula 1.”

Tough on Sargeant

Vowles gave Sargeant every opportunity to deliver. The American was handed a second season in F1 following a difficult maiden year in 2023 but has failed to fully grasp his opportunity.

Whilst there were improvements in certain areas, it was not enough to satisfy Vowles who has again at least stated he and Williams will do everything possible to ensure Sargeant has a future in motorsport.

"This is undoubtedly incredibly tough on Logan, who has given his all throughout his time with Williams, and we want to thank him for all his hard work and positive attitude," said Vowles.

"Logan remains a talented driver and we will support him to continue his racing career for the future."
