Where Gasly sees his place in F1's looming driver chaos

Gasly is one of a number of drivers to be out of contract at the end of 2024, with the '25 driver market set to feature more shuffles after a stagnant market between '23 and '24 where for the first time ever, no team changed its line-up.

The one-time Grand Prix winner joined Alpine for the start of 2023 from AlphaTauri and scored one podium in a below-par year for the team as it slipped to sixth in the Constructors'.

Alpine has gone bold with its new A524 machine, with Technical Director Matt Harman describing how everything but the steering wheel was thrown away in the redesign, with Gasly keen to be regularly in the fight against his former karting rivals that populate seats at the front of the grid.

"There are conversations ongoing, so we will see where it takes us," Gasly told media including RacingNews365.

"But my focus at the moment is just to start off the year doing a good job with the team, and seeing the potential of the car and what we can do with it, and we will see more in the next couple of weeks.

"As a driver, I want to fight at the top of Formula 1, and that is what I'm working towards every single day, trying to chase every single thousandth of a second for a win because I want to fight for wins.

"I've been fighting all my life with Max [Verstappen], Charles [Leclerc], Lando [Norris], George [Russell] and all these guys, that is where I want to go.

"I really hope we manage to get to that potential with Alpine and we manage to get up there."

Gasly also touched upon the recent news of Lewis Hamilton's departure to Ferrari, believing it to be a 'now or never' move.

"[The Hamilton news] is great for the sport," Gasly explained when asked by RacingNews365.

"It is a big move, the most successful driver in the sport is leaving Mercedes after the most successful collaboration ever between the team and a driver in Formula 1.

"It was a now or never, Lewis is coming towards the end of his career, and he grabbed that opportunity and Ferrari did as well so it will be interesting to follow that up.
