Max Verstappen has revealed he has little desire to expand his Formula 1 career and mirror Fernando Alono's stint in the sport.

Alonso, who already holds the all-time record for the most races entered and started, recently committed to Aston Martin for at least the next two seasons.

The two-time world champion's latest contract will take him beyond 45 years of age and see him become the first driver to race in F1 at that age in over 50 years.

Verstappen made his debut nine seasons ago when he was 17 and in recent times has voiced his disapproval over the sport's direction with the introduction of additional races and the alternative F1 Sprint format.

The Dutchman asserted that he is not likely to be present on the grid when he turns 45 in over 18 years.

“Fernando took a bit of time out [at the end of 2018], and then found his love again to be fully competitive in Formula 1,” he told media including RacingNews365.

“It’s very difficult to comment on these kind of things. I don’t think I will be here until I’m 45, but you never know.”

Verstappen not surprised by decision

Alonso's extension at Aston Martin came following speculation that he could switch to Mercedes or even make a blockbuster move to Red Bull.

However, his decision to commit to Aston Martin did not come as a surprise to Verstappen.

“No [I’m not surprised], but I don’t have all the insights,” he said.

“They have a good relationship with each other as well and you don’t know what they’re talking about in the meantime and how the prospects are, so it’s very difficult for me to really comment about it.

“Clearly, they are very ambitious, they want to win in F1. He believes in the project so that it makes sense to sign.”
