Verstappen-Norris penalty verdict delivered by F1 fans

A strong majority of F1 fans believe the stewards were correct to impose two time penalties on Max Verstappen in the Mexico City Grand Prix.

On lap 10 at Turn 4, Verstappen forced Norris off the track with the McLaren attempting to go around the outside - and was deemed by the stewards to have had a fair chance of completing the move before being sent across the run-off by the Red Bull.

Moments later in retaliation, Verstappen lunged Norris at Turn 7, forcing both off the track as the Dutchman received two 10-second time penalties for his actions. For the Turn 4 move, he also picked up two penalty points.

He would go onto finish sixth, losing 10 points in the championship to second-place finisher Norris, with the gap now 47 points with 120 left on the board.

In the aftermath of the incident, RacingNews365 opened a poll asking readers: 'Did Verstappen deserve double penalty for incidents with Norris?'

With just over 11,000 ballots cast, fans have delivered a clear verdict, with some 7,441 or 65.95% believing Verstappen was rightly punished for both moves. 

Some 1,340 voters believed Verstappen should only have been punished for Turn 4, compared to 1,279 for only Turn 7. 

A total of 1,223 voters felt Verstappen had done nothing wrong and did not warrant any penalty from the stewards.

F1 opinions

Reflecting on the incident, some fans made their opinions clear.

"It doesn't matter if you're a Vestappen or Hamilton fan the FIA should have looked at it ages ago," wrote mike-tesco#14469. 

"There is no way you should be allowed to claim a corner if you have to go off track to defend it."

However one user felt Norris had actually made much more of the Turn 4 incident than originally necessary. 

"He turned sharp right, veering even further off the track, to make Verstappen's move appear more extreme," opined Parrot sound Goulding.
