Ricciardo goes up against MotoGP legend in unusual arena

Daniel Ricciardo and Marc Marquez went head-to-head before the Spanish Grand Prix this weekend.

The RB driver and the six-time MotoGP champion swapped tarmac for water, facing off against each other in high-speed sailing with America's Cup team Alinghi Red Bull Racing.

Heading down to Barcelona's seafront, the pair got the chance to experience racing on AC40 yachts, reaching speeds of almost 90km/h.

F1 ultimately prevailed over MotoGP, with Ricciardo besting Marquez, who described the experience.

“The speed is completely different. Maybe in kilometres per hour it’s slower, but the feeling of the speed was super high," the Spanish rider said.

"When you’re in it, you don't feel like you are flying. But then I saw Daniel’s boat flying by our side, and I realised I was too. We were foiling super smoothly.”

Ricciardo, meanwhile, focused on the aerodynamic crossover between boats and cars, adding: “The way these boats are built and the structure feels a lot like the cockpit of a Formula 1 car. 

"They’re super sensitive with the wind, so aerodynamics has some crossover as well. It's a lot like what we do, with small movements and everything needs a lot of finesse.”
