Nürburgring paddock explosion leaves several injured

Several people have been airlifted to hospital following a horrifying explosion in the Nürburgring grand prix paddock. 

The incident took place during the test and setup runs ahead of the Nürburgring Endurance Series' fourth round this weekend.

According to the circuit, it is believed that the devastating explosion was caused by a pressure cylinder. 

Those injured in the blast were immediately treated at the Nürburgring Medical Centre, before being taken to nearby hospitals in the rescue helicopter. 

Nürburgring released a statement on social media, which read: "During the test and setup runs ahead of the fourth round of the Nürburgring Endurance Series (NLS), an explosion occurred shortly after 6 PM behind a pit in the Grand Prix paddock area. 

"Preliminary findings suggest that the explosion was caused by a pressure cylinder.

"Extensive emergency personnel on site immediately initiated appropriate first measures and secured the accident scene. 

"The setup run was immediately interrupted. Initial reports indicate that there are several injured individuals who, after receiving immediate care at the Nürburgring Medical Centre, were transported by rescue helicopter to nearby hospitals. 

"The police are investigating the scene, as is customary in such situations. Further information will follow."

Race goes ahead

It was confirmed on Friday evening by the race organiser's that the six-hour event would go ahead as planned, although two garages were closed. 

According to Motorsport-Total, 22 people were injured in the explosion of a compressed air cylinder. 

It is believed the cylinder was being filled at the time of the blast, with the police having closed the paddock shortly after to conduct an investigation.

Several rescue helicopters and ambulances were dispatched to deal with those injured, with some bystanders having also required assistance.
