Lando Norris has admitted his pursuit of a second career win came undone on the opening lap of the Spanish Grand Prix.

Starting from pole position, Norris slipped to third place after the first corner when he was overtaken by Max Verstappen and George Russell.

The McLaren driver would eventually recover to second place, crossing the line two seconds behind race-winner Verstappen.

However, the Briton reflected that a cleaner start would have likely resulted in a trip to the top step of the podium.

“Not good, I should have done [won the race],” Norris said.

“I got a bad start, simple as that. The car was incredible today. I think we were, for sure, the quickest. I just lost it in the beginning.

“I'm disappointed, but a lot of positives, one negative and that kind of ruined everything. I know that I can just work on it for next time.

“But apart from that, a good amount of points, and big thanks to the team because the car was amazing.”

Norris eyeing Austria, Great Britain chances

The result marked Norris' sixth podium of the campaign and lifted him into second place in the drivers' championship for the first time in his career.

With another two race weekends coming up across the next two weeks, Norris is eyeing a trip to the top step of the podium before the triple-header concludes.

“Austria and Silverstone are two of my favourite tracks in terms of [previous] performances and where I perform well at,” he said.

“I'm excited. We're on a good roll. We're doing well, I need to just tidy up a few little bits and I'll be on top.”
