Red Bull advisor Dr Helmut Marko has stated that the squad's challenger for the upcoming season is “more than an evolution” compared to its predecessor.

The team's RB20 caught the eye when it was unveiled earlier this month ahead of pre-season testing.

One area that caused high intrigue was the narrow sidepod featured on the car.

Red Bull is the heavy favourite heading into the new season due to its strong form last year which saw it win 21 out of the 22 races staged.

As a result of its position over the competition in the pecking order, Red Bull was able to switch focus to its new car earlier than the rest of the field.

Speaking to ServusTV about the RB20, Marko stated: "It's more than an evolution. It's a small revolution.”

The design drew comparisons to the infamous 'zero sidepod' idea that Mercedes unveiled in 2022 when new technical regulations were introduced.

Mercedes was ultimately forced to concede that the concept was not competitive and scrapped the development direction.

Marko insisted that Red Bull's idea is "not as extreme" as Mercedes' previous design but admitted that the idea is "in a similar direction".

The Austrian added: “They [Mercedes] were also convinced by the data of their sidebox-less concept. In practice, it didn't work at all.

"And we will now see in the tests whether we can successfully implement this solution, or let's say a similar solution.”
