Despite never actually winning a world championship, he finished third overall on three occasions, Mark Webber was an exemplary member of the F1 paddock and played a significant role in helping Red Bull Racing reach the pinnacle of the motor racing world.

Making his debut in 2002 with an uncompetitive Minardi team, Mark Webber exceeded expectations in his home race of Australia by finishing fifth. While that was his best result for the season, it was enough to earn him an upgrade to Jaguar for 2003. While his two years at Jaguar gave him no podiums, the Australian consistently outperformed his teammates which warranted a shift to the BMW-Williams outfit.

His stint at Williams would give him the first podium of his career at the 2005 Monaco Grand Prix. His two years with the team were largely frustrating as a combination of bad luck and mistakes saw Webber confined to the midfield. He finished 10th and 14th in the driver’s standings, though it didn’t really represent a fair return for the man known as ‘Aussie Grit’.

Webber would move to Red Bull for 2007, returning to the Milton Keynes based outfit after Red Bull purchased the Jaguar team he raced for in 2003 and 2004. Webber would spend seven years with the team recording multiple wins and coming agonizingly close to the world title in 2010. He would go on to finish third in the driver’s standings on three different occasions in 2010, 2011, and 2013.

The Australian would retire from Formula 1 at the end of the 2013 season and sign with Porsche to compete in the World Endurance Championship and the 24 Hours of LeMans, winning the championship in 2015 and finishing second at LeMans that same year.

While he ended his F1 career with nine wins, there is a case to be made that Webber was unlucky not to have more.

These days he’s still a part of the F1 paddock and often conducts the post-race podium interviews.
