Lewis Hamilton Ferrari replacement driver proposed: 'It would surprise no one'

Ferrari's driver line-up will be in safe hands when Lewis Hamilton departs the team, according to IndyCar driver James Hinchcliffe.

Former IndyCar driver James Hinchcliffe has named Oliver Bearman as Lewis Hamilton's “heir” at Ferrari.

Hamilton joined Ferrari this year following a successful 12-year stint at Mercedes, but has struggled to adapt to the team and is still awaiting his first trip to the podium with the Italian squad.

The 40-year-old has a contract in place for next year - however his future beyond the 2026 campaign is unknown.

Hinchcliffe has suggested that Bearman, who is part of the Ferrari junior programme, is a viable candidate to take over from the seven-time champion.

“Save for a few rookie mistakes early in the year, Bearman is showing himself to be a well-rounded grand prix driver,” Hinchcliffe wrote on F1.com

“This begs the question, what could be next for him?

“We know he has a multi-year deal with Haas. Just as we know Hamilton has a multi-year deal with Ferrari.

“Given he came up through the Ferrari academy, made his (rather successful) debut for the team last year, coupled with the growth and performance he is showing week in and week out, it would surprise no one if Bearman was heir apparent to the seat Hamilton currently occupies when the seven-time champion decades to call it a day on his Formula 1 endeavours.”

Bearman starred to a career-best result last time out in Mexico City, crossing the line in fourth place.

The Briton already has a race start with Ferrari under his belt, having stepped behind the wheel at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix in 2024 as a substitute for Carlos Sainz.

As Bearman aims to close out his rookie F1 campaign on a high, Hinchcliffe sees the 20-year-old having a lengthy career on the grid.

“Needless to say, whether it’s with the Scuderia or not, Bearman’s performances are making it seem like he will be a staple of the grid for years to come.”
