Lawson handed Red Bull test as questions remain over 2025 drive

Liam Lawson was behind the wheel of the Red Bull RB20, and will also be driving the RB machine.

Liam Lawson has completed a test day for Red Bull as questions over whether he will be promoted to a full-time F1 seat in 2025 remain.

As a dedicated test and reserve driver, Lawson was on duty for Red Bull at Monza on Tuesday, completing 104 laps at the wheel of the RB20 in a Pirelli tyre test, two days after the Italian GP.

Kiwi Lawson is a candidate for a full-time F1 debut in 2025, with Red Bull motorsport advisor Helmut Marko keen to promote Lawson after his strong '23 stand-in performances for the then injured Daniel Ricciardo.

With Max Verstappen and Yuki Tsunoda already confirmed at Red Bull and RB for 2025, Red Bull currently has three drivers for two seats, with one of Lawson, Ricciardo and Red Bull incumbent Sergio Perez set to not be on the grid.

If Perez is able to recapture some form for the senior team, he will stay, but could be replaced by either Ricciardo or Lawson if he fails to do so.

Lawson has made no secrets of his desire to be on the grid full-time in 2025, and has hinted that he would be prepared to look outside the Red Bull stable, although the only seat that remains is at Stake/Audi alongside Nico Hulkenberg.

Lawson will be in action once again at Monza on Wednesday 4th September, this time driving for RB as it takes its turn in the Pirelli tyre testing.

Not the only tyre tester

Lawson is not the only driver in action across the Monza tyre test, with Mercedes' George Russell also on duty.

Russell, who finished seventh in the Italian GP, posted 127 laps across the day as Pirelli continues to gather data for the 2025 tyre compounds.

On Wednesday 4th, as well as at Monza, Pirelli is also set to run Ferrari's SF-24 machine at its Fiorano test track for wet-weather tyre testing, with 2025 Haas driver and Scuderia protege Oliver Bearman driving.
