Hamilton contrasts Russell point over potential F1 reversed grids

Lewis Hamilton has revealed that he is in favour of implementing reverse grid races in Formula 1 during sprint weekends.

F1 revealed the six locations that would host sprint events during next year's campaign, with the list including China, which will make its return to the schedule after a four-year absence.

Talks are underway regarding further changes to the format, including a return to Friday afternoon for the sprint qualifying session.

However, it is believed that the prospect of reverse grids is also under discussion.

Reverse grids are used in other series across motorsport, including F1's feeder series Formula 2 and Formula 3.

This is in contrast to team-mate George Russell who explained how a potential reversed grid format would not work.

Hamilton hailed F1 for introducing the Sprint format, which made its debut in 2021.

“Saturday is not the greatest of days, but I like the single practice session straight into qualifying,” he told media including RacingNews365.

“I think we can learn. I love that we do have a different format, rather than just the same three practice sessions and then the qualifying and the race.”

With reverse grid races on the agenda, Hamilton admitted that would be in favour of the change.

“The best sprint race I ever had was when I started last [in Brazil 2021] and so I'm in favour of the reverse order, except if we had that then everyone will just try and qualify last!

“But I think it maybe should be a little bit longer the sprint race because it's something like 19 laps or something.”
