George Russell F1 News

George Russell enjoyed an excellent Formula 1 season with Mercedes in 2024. Although the car was not competitive enough to consistently challenge Red Bull, Ferrari, and McLaren, the Briton still managed to secure two victories. Russell won the Austrian and Brazilian Grands Prix. He finished the season with 245 points, comfortably ahead of his teammate Lewis Hamilton who scored 223. With Hamilton's departure to Ferrari and the arrival of the young Kimi Antonelli, 2025 will be a crucial year for Russell to perform well for the team.

George Russell F1

After winning two CIK-FIA European Karting titles and the BRDC Formula 4 Championship, George Russell endured two relatively barren years racing in the FIA European Formula 3 Championship, finishing sixth and third. A move to the GP3 (now FIA Formula 3) Championship would prove more fruitful, as he won the title in his maiden year driving for ART Grand Prix. He clinched back-to-back titles in 2018, securing the FIA Formula 2 Championship in dominant fashion, once again with ART. 
 

Having signed for the Mercedes Young Driver Programme in 2017, Russell's results would earn him a place in F1 with Williams Racing in 2019, where he lined up alongside race-winner Robert Kubica. Despite failing to score a single point over the entirety of the season, Russell outqualified his more experienced teammate in every single round of the championship. 
 

In 2020, Russell was partnered by rookie Nicholas Latifi. Now the de-facto team leader, the Briton showed flashes of pace, entering Q2 on a number of occasions. His big break came at the Sakhir Grand Prix when he substituted at Mercedes for Lewis Hamilton, who had tested positive for COVID-19. Despite leading for much of the race, a botched pit-stop and puncture would see Russell finish ninth.

After a third season with Williams in 2021 – during which he scored his first points for the team – Russell was announced as a Mercedes driver for 2022, partnering seven-time World Champion Lewis Hamilton.

It proved to be a difficult year for the Silver Arrows, with the team struggling to get on top of issues with their W13 car following the introduction of new technical regulations in the sport. Russell became one of the season's most consistent performers, though, and finished in the points at all but two races.

In 2023, Russell, along with Hamilton, will once again drive for Mercedes. Their goal was to make strides toward the top team, Red Bull, and compete for the world titles. However, it quickly became apparent that Red Bull was too dominant, turning it into a battle for the second position with Ferrari. Mercedes emerged victorious in this battle. George Russell earned 175 points this season compared to his teammate's 234 points.

On August 31st, 2023, Mercedes announced that Russell would continue to race for the British team in both 2024 and 2025. After scoring 245 points and securing two victories in the 2024 season, all eyes are now on Russell as Lewis Hamilton has moved to Ferrari and the young Kimi Antonelli takes his place. This will be a crucial season for the Briton, as his contract with Mercedes expires at the end of the year.
