Lando Norris finished the United States Grand Prix third on the road, but a five-second time penalty dropped him a position, behind championship rival Max Verstappen.

In the closing stages of the race at the Circuit of the Americas, the McLaren driver was piling the pressure on the three-time drivers' champion, eventually finding a way past at the exit of Turn 12 on lap 52 of 56.

However, both drivers went off-track, with Norris completing the move having not been ahead during the apex of the corner.

The stewards felt Norris should have given the place back - as did Red Bull, unsurprisingly - and gave the 24-year-old his punishment.

What muddies the water is that to some, Norris only went off track because Verstappen forced him there, and was only ahead at the apex because he was not going to make the corner - something that prevented Norris from doing so, too.

The intervention by the stewards means a six-point swing in the F1 drivers' championship, from 51 points to 57, so it was not an inconsequential decision.
