Being the son of a former Formula 1 world champion is never easy, especially when you are a racing driver yourself. Damon Hill, son of two-time champion Graham Hill, not only lived up to expectations but claimed the title himself in 1996. As a result he became the first son to emulate his father, a feat that has since been matched by Nico and Keke Rosberg.

Hill is unique because unlike many of his peers he only made it onto the F1 grid after the age of 30, partly due to the fact that he started racing motorcycles rather than cars. His junior formula career was unremarkable, finishing third in the British Formula Ford championship and British F3. Though he was competitive in F3000 machinery, Hill never won a race in that category.

His hard-working nature however impressed F1 team boss Sir Frank Williams, who offered him a test driver role with Williams in 1991. Hill eventually made his grand prix debut with the struggling Brabham team, though his F1 results would be disastrous. However his efforts with Williams didn’t go unnoticed and Hill played a crucial part in developing Mansell’s all-conquering FW14B car.

Hill would then be promoted to a race seat in 1993, partnering four-time French world champion Alain Prost. The British driver would finish third overall in the championship securing three wins. The following year would see Hill become the team leader after Ayrton Senna’s untimely death at the San Marino Grand Prix. The Brit ended the season in second place after a controversial incident with Michael Schumacher at the season finale in Adelaide, and also finished runner up to the German in 1995.

The following year would see Hill partner Jacques Villeneuve, who himself was trying to emulate his father Gilles. The 1995 Indycar and Indianapolis 500 winner would be the Brit’s only real challenger for the title as Williams would romp to the constructor’s title, winning 12 of 16 races that season. Hill would go on to win the championship by 19 points, writing his name into the history books of F1 greats.

Hill competed in F1 for three more years with Arrows and Jordan, adding another solitary victory to his tally. He stayed involved in motorsports most notably as the president for the BRDC between 2006-2011.
