Charles Leclerc F1 news

The 2024 Formula 1 season was a strong one for Leclerc, with an impressive 13 podium finishes and just two retirements. He scored 356 points, finishing third overall, narrowly behind Lando Norris on 374 points. This was his final season with Carlos Sainz as teammate, as Lewis Hamilton will join him in 2025.

Leclerc early years

Born in Monte Carlo, Charles Leclerc began karting in 2005 and won several titles before graduating into single-seaters in 2014. In his debut season in Formula Renault, he secured seven podiums – which included a double victory at Monza – to finish the championship in second place.

Leclerc then progressed into Formula 3 in 2015, where he raced for Dutch team Van Amersfoort Racing and won three times. He briefly led the championship before finishing fourth. However, success would follow in 2016 and 2017, when he secured the GP3 and Formula 2 titles respectively. In 2016, Leclerc also joined the Ferrari Driver Academy, allowing him to act as a development driver for Haas and Ferrari. In capturing the Formula 2 crown, Leclerc became the youngest-ever champion of the F1 support series. 
 

Leclerc F1 Debut

Practically peerless in GP3 and F2, much was expected when Sauber announced they had signed Leclerc to replace Pascal Wehrlein ahead of the 2018 Formula 1 season. He delivered, dragging his car to its limit and often beyond. It was this type of form that convinced Ferrari he was ready to step up and replace Kimi Raikkonen in 2019.

Just as he has done throughout his career, Leclerc hit the ground running, outscoring his four-time World Champion teammate Sebastain Vettel in their first season together. This included memorable wins at two of the most famous tracks in the sport – Spa-Francorchamps and Ferrari's hallowed Monza home.

Even without the car beneath him in 2020, Leclerc still showed flashes of brilliance, most notably in Austria and Great Britain where he finished on the podium, and at the Sakhir Grand Prix, when he qualified fourth.

Carlos Sainz becomes Leclerc's teammate

After comfortably getting the better of Vettel, Leclerc faced a new challenge in 2021 when Carlos Sainz joined the team. The pair were mostly evenly matched throughout the year, though it was Sainz who scored more highly in the World Championship. This marked the first time that Leclerc had been beaten by a teammate over the course of a season in his racing career.

The 2022 campaign got off to a promising start for Ferrari, with the team seemingly having gained the edge after a wave of new technical regulations were introduced into the sport. Leclerc led Sainz in a 1-2 finish at the season-opening race in Bahrain.

Lewis Hamilton becomes Leclerc's teammate
