Antonelli suffers major crash during F1 debut

The Mercedes protege crashed heavily at Parabolica on his F1 debut.

Mercedes protege Andrea Kimi Antonelli crashed heavily out of Free Practice 1 on his F1 debut at the Italian Grand Prix.

10 minutes into the FP1 session for which he was deputising for George Russell, Antonelli, who was fourth in the times, lost control of the W15 rounding the Parabolica, spitting him broadside into the tyre barrier after flying through the gravel.

He was able to climb unaided from the car, with Antonelli being taken to the medical centre as is normal procedure.

Antonelli apologised to the team for the accident, which prompted a rare intervention over the radio to calm the 18-year-old from Toto Wolff, insisting "it was all good, Kimi."

Antonelli has been tipped as the replacement for Ferrari-bound Lewis Hamilton in 2025, with the Briton topping the times before the red flag was flown for the crash.
