Fernando Alonso has admitted he is open to the possibility of a World Endurance Championship campaign with Aston Martin.

The British manufacturer is set to enter the championship next year with the Aston Martin Valkyrie challenger.

Alonso has won the World Endurance Championship as well as holding a duo of victories at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, having spent time with Toyota when he took a break from F1.

The Spaniard is currently assessing whether or not he wishes to remain in F1 beyond the current campaign.

When asked if he would be interested in taking on a role with Aston Martin in WEC, Alonso told media including RacingNews365: ”Yeah, [but] not now. It didn’t come to my mind.

“I love the Valkyrie. I receive mine [road car version] in July. I'm waiting for so long, because it's one year to deliver!

“So why not? Maybe, if I drive that car at home and then drive it on a circuit, that will be beautiful."

Alonso linked to Red Bull F1 drive

The two-time World Champion has been linked to a number of F1 projects with his contract expiring at the end of the current campaign.

Alonso’s name has been put forward for a potential drive at Mercedes when Lewis Hamilton departs for Ferrari.

However, ex-F1 Ralf Schumacher believes that Red Bull is another option for the 42-year-old.

“Christian Horner [Red Bull team principal] has always been a very, very big fan of Alonso,” Schumacher said.

“Apparently there are big intentions in the background, to bring Alonso into the cockpit next year to have another strong driver if Verstappen leaves the team.

"If Alonso were to get Red Bull at the end of his career - the car with which he can win - Alonso obviously wants that.”
