Stake F1 team

Stake F1 Team will look to improve towards the midfield in 2025, with the team fielding Nico Hülkenberg and Gabriel Bortoleto as new drivers. Besides, the team will prepare everything this year to be acquired by Audi for the 2026 season.

Started as Sauber

The team headquarters are located in Hinwil, Switzerland, where they started their F1 journey back in 1993 as Sauber. Rarely able to challenge for a place at the front of the grid, owner and Team Principal Peter Sauber made the most of his resources while striking deals with the likes of Red Bull, Petronas and Credit Suisse to keep the team moving forward. 
 

BMW bought the squad in 2005, and the newly branded BMW-Sauber team would see an upturn in fortunes, with their sole victory coming at the 2008 Canadian Grand Prix with Robert Kubica. While the outfit would finish the year third in the Constructors' Standings, the success did not last for long as BMW exited the sport soon after, with Peter Sauber once again back at the helm.

Some success was followed by financial instability, and Swiss-based investment group Longbow Finance bought the team in 2016. Alfa Romeo was initially brought in as a title sponsor in late 2017, though Team Principal Frederic Vasseur made it clear soon after that the Italian manufacturer intended to take over the team.

Alfa Romeo returning to the grid

That happened in 2019, with Alfa Romeo returning to the grid for the first time as a constructor since 1985. Viewed as a junior team to Ferrari by some, the squad's best result came at the 2019 Brazilian Grand Prix, where Kimi Raikkonen and Antonio Giovinazzi finished fourth and fifth respectively.

A disappointing 2020 campaign followed. Whilst the team had scored a respectable 57 points in 2019, they came crashing back to earth with just eight points in 2020. Hurt by an under-powered Ferrari engine, Alfa Romeo scoed points at just four races in the campaign, as they fought the likes of Haas and Williams at the back of the grid more often than not.

There was not much improvement in 2021, and the year ended with both Raikkonen and Giovinazzi saying their goodbyes. Raikkonen had decided to retire from Formula 1 after an extensive career, whilst Giovinazzi was dropped in favour of rookie driver Guanyu Zhou. Raikkonen, meanwhile, was replaced by Valtteri Bottas, who joined following five years at Mercedes.

A season which started with early promise ended with the team only just able to hang on to P6 in the Constructors' Championship in 2022, with Bottas using his years of knowledge to profit from a quick car in the early part of the season. The team had a bad 2023 season and ended P9 in the Constructors' Championship. In 2024, the team will be renamed to Stake F1 Team.

Stake F1 Team's performance in 2024 and 2025

Unfortunately, the team had a terrible 2024 season, with the car clearly not competitive enough to fight for points. Only Guanyu Zhou managed to score points during the Qatar Grand Prix, and the team finished last in the championship with just four points.

However, with the arrival of Mattia Binotto and Jonathan Wheatley, among others, expectations are that the team will perform better in 2025. Additionally, two new drivers have been signed, namely the experienced Nico Hülkenberg and the rookie Gabriel Bortoleto. With the transition to Audi in 2026 in mind, it will be interesting to see how the team performs this year. Especially with the arrival of the experienced Nico Hülkenberg and the rookie Gabriel Bortoleto.
