Carlos Sainz is hopeful Ferrari will be able to “consistently” fight Red Bull after the opening third of the season.

The Italian squad has already taken a victory in the first four rounds with Sainz triumphing at the Australian Grand Prix last month.

Although Ferrari showcased strong pace throughout the weekend in Melbourne, its victory prospects were boosted when Max Verstappen retired with a terminal brake issue.

At the following round in Japan, Verstappen returned to the top step as he cruised to victory while Sainz crossed the line in third place.

When asked if Verstappen already has the 2024 title in the bag, Sainz told media including RacingNews365: “I think they are definitely going to have an advantage in the first third of the season until we bring one or two upgrades that make us fight them more consistently.

“By that time maybe it's a bit too late with the advantage that they might have on the championship.

“In the meantime, we need more Australias! Which I don't see Red Bull, as a team, making these mistakes very often.”

Missing Jeddah 'could be costly'

Sainz returned to the cockpit in Australia having missed the second round of the season in Saudi Arabia due to appendicitis.

The Spaniard is concerned that the missed outing could prove pivotal in the end-of-year standings.

“A shame, because also I missed a race, which for both the team and me, it could be costly in the championship,” Sainz admitted.

“We’re competing in one race less, but at the same time, we're going to give it our best shot.

“It’s my last year in Ferrari also, so nothing to lose and we will try everything to make it back.”
