Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko has revealed that Max Verstappen discovered Red Bull's key weakness with the RB20 car during an engineering meeting at Monza.

The reigning world champions have suffered a substantial step back in the pecking order at recent events.

At the Italian Grand Prix, Verstappen and team-mate Sergio Perez could only muster sixth and eighth respectively with McLaren narrowing the gap in the constructors' championship to just eight points.

Red Bull started the current season in strong fashion but has seen its form dwindle over the last couple of months, with its most recent win coming in Spain - well over two months ago.

Both drivers have struggled with the balance of the car and a long engineering meeting was held at Monza - where it was Verstappen, rather than the engineers, who uncovered the issue.

"Max recognised on Saturday where the weakness of the car is," Marko told De Telegraaf

"Together with the engineers, a decision was made on how to improve the car and make it competitive again.

“We just need to find out which part made the car worse. If we knew that, we wouldn't be in this situation."

Marko also suggested Red Bull will once again experiment in Azerbaijan in under two weeks' time.

However, the 81-year-old conceded that Red Bull will likely not be in a competitive position until the United States Grand Prix.
