Nyck de Vries news

The 2023 Formula 1 season has started and rookie Nyck de Vries is making his first meters in the AlphaTauri car. He finished the first Grand Prix in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia in 14th place, just three places behind teammate Tsunoda who narrowly missed out on a point. At the Australian Grand Prix, Nyck was less lucky and was hit from behind by Logan Sargeant's Williams. He took this bad luck to the race in Baku, where Nyck hit the wall with his AlphaTauri. He did manage sixth place here during the first free practice.

After ten races and disappointing results, the best result being a P12 at the Monaco Grand Prix, it has been officially announced that Nyck de Vries will lose his AlphaTauri seat with immediate effect. He will therefore not appear on the grid during his home race at Zandvoort either. Daniel Ricciardo will replace Nyck de Vries from the Hungarian Grand Prix.

Nyck de Vries F1

Nyck de Vries's big F1 dream seems to be long overdue yet again. During the 2022 season, the Dutchman does appear in action for Aston Martin, Williams and Mercedes during free practice sessions. Once again, a racing seat does not seem to be in the cards until Williams driver Alexander Albon suffers acute appendicitis. Nyck de Vries is rushed by Williams and makes his official F1 debut during the F1 weekend in Monza. In his first race, he finishes ninth, scoring two important World Cup points.

De Vries to AlphaTauri

The rock-solid performance in the Williams is rewarded with a full-time contract for two seasons at AlphaTauri, Red Bull's sister team. Adviser Helmut Marko is so impressed that he speaks to the Friesian in the weeks after the Monza GP. It means there will be two Dutchmen at the start of Formula 1 in 2023: Max Verstappen and Nyck de Vries.

De Vries early years

Having taken several karting titles, de Vries was signed to McLaren's young driver programme in 2010, and moved up into single seaters in 2012.After winning both the Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 and Formula Renault 2.0 Alps titles in 2014, de Vries progressed into Formula Renault 3.5 in 2015, taking a win at Jerez on his way to finishing the series in third place as the year's top rookie. The Dutchman spent 2016 in GP3, before moving up to Formula 2 in 2017. After spending the next two years in the series, he won the championship in 2019 and later made a switch Formula E in 2021, where he returned in 2024 after being sacked by AlphaTauri's F1-team.

Nyck de Vries Formula E

As a driver for Mercedes-Benz EQ, De Vries made his debut in Formula E in 2020. The team also began its debut season, so together they were occasionally searching in the unpredictable electric racing class. In a shaky and corona-influenced season, De Vries got no further than a podium and 11th place in the championship.

Because he was now associated with Mercedes, he was at the same time the official test and reserve driver of the Formula One world champions. For a moment, he looked like he might make his F1 debut after Lewis Hamilton became infected with the corona virus.

However, he and fellow Mercedes reserve Stoffel Vandoorne were passed over and Mercedes junior and then-Williams driver George Russell was allowed a one-time taste of Hamilton's Silver Arrow. De Vries did, however, get to test in Mercedes' F1 car for the first time at the end of the year during the Young Driver test in Abu Dhabi.

That year, as in 2019 by the way, De Vries also competed in the 24 Hours of Le Mans on behalf of Racing Team Nederland. The ninth place in the 2019 LMP2 class was not improved. He finished fifteenth, after De Vries crashed hard (through no fault of his own) during the famous Endurance race.

In 2021, the Sneker is once again at the start of the Formula E season with Mercedes. This time he knows more success. What's hot! De Vries shines and is the most constant driver of the field. With two wins and a total of four podiums, he rushes to the Formula E world title. Thus, he became the first world champion in the electric racing class, which had been pinned on the World Championship label as of that season.

In a field with drivers such as Lucas di Grassi, Antonio Felix da Costa, Stoffel Vandoorne, Jean-Éric Vergne and many more big names, De Vries was too strong for anyone during the crazy season. That way, suddenly every motorsports fan in the world knew, if they didn't already, the name of Nyck de Vries.

In the midst of it all, De Vries was also test driver for Toyota Gazoo Racing, which has reigned in the World Endurance Championship in recent years in the LMP1 and new Hypercar.

In 2022, De Vries will once again be at the start of the Formula E season. This time as reigning world champion. The season goes with ups and downs. De Vries wins two races, but this time only finishes the championship in ninth place.

In 2024, De Vries returns to Formula E after a year's absence as Mahindra driver.

Nyck de Vries World Endurance Championship Toyota

In 2024, Nyck de Vries is not sitting still. In addition to returning to Formula E, he will also drive in the World Endurance Championship (WEC) as a full-time Toyota works driver. Read more about it here.

Nyck de Vries parents

Nyck de Vries' father is Hendrik Jan de Vries and Nyck de Vries' mother is Naomi Hesseling. His father Hendrik Jan played and still plays an important role in Nyck's career. For example, Nyck toured Europe with his father in a van with karts in the back. Nyck's father was also a driver himself and drove for team Bleekemolen.

Nyck's mother has Indonesian roots. She has not been together with Nyck's father since Nyck was young and has not played a major role in his life. However, there is still regular contact between mother and son.

Nyck de Vries sister

Nyck also has a sister called Seychelle de Vries. In the past, she had a relationship with Mercedes driver George Russell.
