Lando Norris has insisted he must make self-improvements before being considered ready to challenge for an F1 title.

The McLaren driver currently sits second in the drivers' championship, 78 points behind Red Bull's three-time F1 champion Max Verstappen.

The Woking-based squad has been lifted into title contention this year and has been tipped to push Red Bull for the constructors' title, with the gap between the two teams just 42 points.

McLaren has made sizeable steps across the last two years and is looking towards mounting a title charge again in 2025 for both championships.

When asked if a target is to fashion himself into being a favourite for next year's title, Norris told Sky F1: “It’s always nice to say things like that, and have that optimism.

“I've got to work on myself and work on a few things first. I feel like I've had the car and I've got what I need around me.”

Norris highlights 'small' but costly mistakes

Norris, however, pointed to his starts in particular as a current weak point after making a mistake on the opening lap of the Belgian Grand Prix at the first corner.

“I've probably made a few too many mistakes,” Norris said. “I've made a few too many mistakes over the last month or so, I've lost opportunities.

“It’s my starts, just some decision-making here and there. It’s small things that have had big consequences.

“A lot of stuff now in F1, a small difference will have a big consequence because it's so close.

“I know that and I know I've got to work on my things and keep focused so that's what I’ll use the summer break for.

“As much as it is to disconnect, it’s to review a lot of things and make sure I come back stronger.”
