Jos Verstappen, the father of Max, has handed Red Bull its latest warning, that the team should "look in the mirror" should it not deliver the best package to his son.

The father of the four-time world champion is usually a present figure in the F1 paddock, but has missed the majority of races this season.

However, Jos is in Monaco for this weekend's Monaco Grand Prix, supporting Max as he looks to reduce Oscar Piastri's advantage.

Reflecting on his small break from being in the paddock and missing Red Bull's difficult races in the likes of China, Jos viewed it as potentially a positive.

"Maybe it was a good thing that I wasn't there then, also for my own state of mind," Jos told De Telegraaf

"Two days later you naturally look at certain things differently, but sport is also emotion. I just want the best for Max. And if it doesn't work out then, Red Bull should look in the mirror."

Jos' relationship with Red Bull team principal Christian Horner has been known to be fractious, although he has insisted it is not the reason for his absence.

"We shouldn't go on vacation together," laughed Jos. "But I don't work for the team and he is the team boss, so there has to be mutual respect and there is."

Unfortunately, Jos' absence has actually been partly due to his wife facing health difficulties, alongside his growing dislike of how F1 is today.

"My wife is struggling with health problems and I want to be there for her too," he added. "And everyone knows that I don't like the Formula 1 world as much as I used to."

His return to the Red Bull garage has come at a time when things are improving for the Austrian outfit, in particular after Max's Imola win.

"It definitely looks more positive," said Jos. "Monaco is a bit of an odd duck, but think in Barcelona we are going to see where Red Bull actually stands."
