Red Bull team principal Christian Horner has revealed that Sergio Perez's two-year deal is actually in the form of a one plus one, rather than an outright contract until the end of 2026.

It was announced ahead of the Canadian Grand Prix on Tuesday that Perez had signed a contract extension, keeping him alongside Max Verstappen for the foreseeable future.

Perez is not the only Red Bull family driver to have received a new deal, as it was announced 30 minutes ahead of qualifying that RB has activated an option in Yuki Tsunoda's contract to retain him for 2025.

Horner has explained the reasoning for the two contracts and has revealed some details about Perez's deal.

"They are all Red Bull drivers," Horner told Viaplay

"We decided to extend Checo for one more year, but in the meantime we also wanted to exercise Yuki's option. He is doing great at VCARB at the moment. So yes, he will stay for another year."

'1+1=2'

Interestingly, Red Bull has opted to give Perez a one-year plus one-year contract, with there being several clauses seemingly within it.

Horner went into some more detail about the contract that was offered to Perez, which suggests that the Mexican driver sticking with Red Bull for 2026 and the new power unit regulations is not guaranteed.

"Well, 1+1=2, so it's a two-year contract," explained Horner.

"As with any contract, there is all kinds of things in it, but that is, of course, between the driver and the team."
