Aston Martin F1 news

Operating out of the United Kingdom, Aston Martin returned to Formula 1 in 2021 for the first time since 1960 after the rebranding of Racing Point. Lawrence Stroll, father of Lance, owns the team after leading a consortium that bought Force India back in August 2018. 
 

While Aston Martin returned for the first time in decades, the outfit that the brand have taken over from have roots that date back to 1991. The original team began life as Jordan, who subsequently gave Michael Schumacher his first start on the grid at the Belgian Grand Prix. 
 

The team achieved success in 1999, with Heinz-Harald Frentzen winning two races, but a downturn in fortune and financial stability saw Jordan sold in 2005 and rebranded as Midland F1 Racing for the 2006 campaign. The team was then sold to Spyker Cars, resulting in the name becoming Spyker F1 in 2007.

Businessman Vijay Mallya bought the outfit in 2007, ushering in a period of stability that saw the newly-named Force India overachieve at times. They claimed six podiums across the next 10 seasons, and finished fourth in the Constructors' standings in 2016 and 2017. However, all of that was undone in 2018 when Mallya's financial and legal troubles resulted in the team going into administration.

Up stepped Lawrence Stroll and his Racing Point UK consortium, as they purchased Force India's assets. Lawrence's F1 driver son Lance joined his father at the team for the 2019 season, and a memorable moment for the outfit followed when Sergio Perez took his first F1 win at the 2020 Sakhir Grand Prix.

Racing Point will become Aston Martin

For 2021, the Aston Martin name replaced Racing Point, and Perez was left without a seat at the squad after Sebastian Vettel joined from Ferrari. Stroll remained with the team for a third season. There were mixed fortunes for Aston Martin in their comeback campaign, with the high point being Vettel's podium at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, and they finished the campaign in seventh in the Constructors' Championship.

Vettel and Stroll continued with Aston Martin into 2022, and a season of two halves only saw the team become regular point scorers in the second half of the season.

Fernando Alonso joins Aston Martin in 2023 & 2024

Vettel announced his retirement, and two time World Champion Fernando Alonso was swiftly drafted in for 2023 to partner Lance Stroll. The team will be hoping continue their upwards trajectory from the end of 2022 and push forward into 2023.

The team had a great start to the 2023 season and held the second position in the constructor's championship for a long time. Fernando Alonso kept picking up podiums, securing a total of 8 podiums during the season. In the middle of the season, the team wasn't able to develop the car as efficiently as the competitors. As a result, Aston Martin couldn't maintain the second position in the championship and finished fifth.

Unfortunately, the positive momentum from 2023 couldn't be carried over into 2024. The team scored a decent amount of points in the early races, but performance declined as the season progressed. As a result, no significant progress was made compared to the previous season. The team remained stuck in the role of 'best of the rest' while the ambition is to compete for victories. However, with the arrival of experienced designers Adrian Newey and Andy Cowell, expectations for the coming seasons are high.
