Belgian Grand Prix 2021

The last 10 pole-sitters and race winners at the Belgian GP

Formula 1 returns this weekend with the Belgian Grand Prix. Let's take a look at the recent history from the fan-favourite event.

The Belgian Grand Prix is one of Formula 1's most iconic events and this weekend's race could be a classic.

Max Verstappen will be hoping to take pole position at Spa-Francorchamps, something Red Bull haven't done for 10 years.

Apart from Charles Leclerc's brilliant performance in 2019, Mercedes have been fastest in qualifying since 2013.

The high-speed nature of the 7.004km track suits the philosophy of the Mercedes cars and they will be eager to continue their strong record in qualifying at Spa on Saturday.

Nailing a lap at Spa is a fantastic feeling for the drivers. Carrying so much speed through corners such as the legendary Eau Rouge and the double-left of Pouhon give the drivers a thrill they'll find tough to experience anywhere else in the world.

Lewis Hamilton has won on four occasions in Belgium, the joint most for a driver on the current grid along with Kimi Raikkonen.

In the last 10 years, Mercedes have unsurprisingly had the upper hand which has been the case at most tracks during F1's turbo-hybrid era.

It's a track Red Bull haven't won at since 2014 when Daniel Ricciardo took advantage of Hamilton's and Nico Rosberg's clash in the early stages of the Grand Prix.

Despite the claim that pole position isn't necessarily the best place to start, due to the possibility of being overtaken in the first sector on the opening lap by the car behind, the pole-sitter has won seven of the last 10 races.

The last time this didn't happen was in 2018 when Sebastian Vettel pulled off that exact move of slipstreaming pole-sitter Hamilton and getting ahead on the Kemmel Straight.
