Fernando Alonso F1 News

Two-time Formula 1 World Champion Fernando Alonso returned to the grid with old friends in new clothes at Alpine (formerly Renault) in 2021, in a reunion both parties hope will help the famous French brand push forward to challenge the front of the grid. He currently races for the Aston Martin F1 Team. On this page, you will find all related news to the Spaniard.

Alonso F1

The Spanish driver is one of the most recognisable names in all of motorsport, having burst into the public consciousness as F1's then youngest-ever race winner in his debut season with Renault in 2003. The successful partnership continued from there, as Alonso went on to win back-to-back World Championships in 2005 and 2006, replacing Emerson Fittipaldi as the sports' then youngest-ever champion in the process.

Alonso began his racing career by karting in his home region of Asturias, Spain, before moving up to cars in the 1999 Euro Nissan series with local team Campos Racing. He first made the move into top level open-wheel racing as a test and reserve driver for Formula 1 team Minardi in 2000. Alonso made his debut on the race team in 2001, and then joined Renault for the following year as a test driver before getting a race seat in 2003.

Teammate with Lewis Hamilton

After his World Championship triumphs, Alonso signed a contract to drive alongside a young Lewis Hamilton at McLaren for the 2007 season. The venture ended abruptly, as both parties mutually agreed to part ways at the end of the year, paving the way for the Spaniard to return to Renault.

Two relatively uncompetitive seasons followed with the French outfit before Alonso joined Ferrari in 2010, where he scored two second place finishes in the World Championship before rejoining McLaren for the 2015 season. In his second stint with the Woking-based outfit, Alonso struggled with an uncompetitive and often unreliable car, and the driver's vocal frustration with his machinery and dissatisfaction with the sport prompted him to leave F1 at the end of 2018 to seek other challenges.

Other victories for Alonso

It didn’t take long for Alonso to find those other pursuits, as he won the World Endurance Championship with Toyota and the 24 Hours of Le Mans twice, competed in the Dakar Rally and raced for Arrow McLaren SP in the Indianapolis 500 in the United States.

Alonso back in F1 with Alpine

Despite his adventures elsewhere in the motorsport world, Alonso opted to return to the F1 paddock for the 2021 season with the relaunched Alpine, formerly known as Renault. The Spaniard showed that he still had the same drive and determination after his hiatus, and the high point of his year came with a podium finish at the Qatar Grand Prix, his first top-three result in seven years.

This success continued into 2022 as both Alonso and Ocon managed to secure fourth in the Constructors' Championship ahead of main rivals McLaren.

Fernando Alonso joins Aston Martin

A year later, in 2023, Alonso switched from Alpine to Aston Martin. There, he drives alongside his Canadian teammate Lance Stroll. In 2023, Fernando Alonso had a strong season with eight podium finishes, but Aston Martin's performance showed a downward trend as the season progressed. The team was unable to reverse this trend in 2024 and had a disappointing season. Alonso finished ninth in the championship that year.
