In relative terms, Nicholas Latifi was late to motorsport. He began his karting career at the age of 13, and made his single-seater debut three years later in 2012. In the Italian Formula 3 Championship of that year, Latifi finished seventh before going on to compete in the Formula 3 European Championship - among other categories - in 2013 and 2014. From there, he progressed into GP2 and then Formula 2, where he finished the 2019 season in second place behind Nyck de Vries.

Having been signed as a test and reserve driver for the Williams F1 team in 2019, Latifi got his break when he inherited the race seat left vacant by Robert Kubica in 2020. Although the season was delayed by a few months due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Canadian eventually made his debut at the Austrian Grand Prix. It proved to be a disappointing rookie campaign for Latifi, though. Not only was he hindered by an uncompetitive Williams car, but he was also comprehensively outperformed by his teammate, George Russell.

There were signs of improvement in 2021, both for Latifi and the Williams outfit, and the Canadian scored his first points in Formula 1 at the Hungarian Grand Prix. Unfortunately Latifi attracted attention for the wrong reasons at the end of the year, when his crash in the final laps of the season-closing Abu Dhabi Grand Prix led to a Safety Car period, which ultimately had a dramatic effect on the outcome of the title battle between Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton.

Latifi will be hoping to move on from these events in 2022, where he enters into his third season in F1 with Williams. He will be joined by new teammate Alex Albon, who replaces Russell following the Briton's move to Mercedes.
